TikTok vs Instagram Reels in 2026: Where Should Your Brand Focus?

The algorithms have diverged and most brands are still running the same playbook on both. Here's why that's costing them — and what to do instead.

Two years ago the answer was simple: post on both, repurpose everything. The algorithms were similar enough that most content worked across both platforms with minimal adaptation. That's no longer true.

How the algorithms have diverged

TikTok in 2025 is a pure discovery engine. Its algorithm will show your content to people who have never heard of you if the content is strong. The barrier to reaching new audiences is lower than any other platform.

Instagram Reels has shifted toward prioritizing accounts people already follow or engage with. Organic discovery is harder. But the conversion path from Instagram is significantly shorter — people buy more directly from Instagram than from TikTok.

The platforms now serve different purposes in a funnel, even though the content format looks identical.

TikTok: where new audiences find you

If you're growing awareness or testing messaging with people who've never seen your brand, TikTok is your primary vehicle. Content needs to be native — it needs to feel like TikTok, not like an adapted ad.

Instagram: where interested audiences convert

Instagram Reels works best for warming up audiences that have already found you. It's stronger for B2B and premium product categories, where the audience is older and spends more time on Instagram.

The practical answer

For most brands in 2025: lead with TikTok for discovery, use Instagram to convert and retain. Produce content natively for TikTok. Repurpose winners to Instagram — different caption, sometimes different hook, always without the TikTok watermark.

The brands wasting the most money right now treat both platforms identically. The ones growing fastest understand that the same video is a different tool depending on where it lives.
